Support Victoria Island and Idle No More!

I received an email from Victoria Island as to what their needs are. I would like to make a trip to Costco and some of the nearby elk/deer ranches to try and buy as many of the supplies as possible. I am asking for donations from people who want to help out the protest, to increase how many of the supplies I am able to purchase.

Any small contribution would help and all of the money will be used for this purpose. I will post an accounting of what was spent and on what on here. Any extra money that might be received or that cannot be used for whatever reason will be given to Victoria Island, either directly as cash or as a gas card.

If you live in Ottawa and would like to donate, but are not able to contribute to the Chip In, let me know and I will see about meeting you somewhere for pick up.

  1. Hi. I followed a link from Twitter here, and I don't understand why you're raising money. Has there been a natural disaster? Is there some sort of illness? Why are people being asked to contribute? Who is Chief Spence and what is Idle No More?

    1. Hi!

Chief Spence is a Native leader who has been on a hunger strike for the last 34 days. Her hunger strike is in response to a recent initiative by Harper and the government that violates several treaty rights, but more over, also destroys environmental protections.

An example of this is the fact that before Dec.5 We has several thousand protected lakes and rivers, and after that date we have less than a hundred of each.

Her hunger strike has a simple request, for Harper and the Governor General to meet with the chiefs of various First Nations people and discuss in good faith the violation of the treaty rights.

Idle No More, is an initiative started by Native Women. It is a response by Native peoples to say that they won't sit back and be idle as their rights are violated. Hundreds of Native Women, for example, disappear every year without investigation.

Victoria Island is an island between Ottawa and Gatineau that has a tee-pee set up. It is where Chief Theresa Spence is doing her hunger strike, along with several volunteers. Many first nations volunteers have gathered on the island to show support for the Chiefs and to help as much as possible. Many are staying in tents, they have port-a-potties (which I can tell you from experience are brutal in winter.).

The actual island itself is small, and is not really close to resources like a grocery store, etc. Moreover, it is to be expected that since while they are on the island they are not working, the monetary resources are pretty strained as well, so they rely on donations from people to be able to keep going.
